Fordham Sports Law Forum

The Fordham Sports Law Forum was created in 1996 and is a student run organization at Fordham University School of Law.  Each year, the Forum produces sports law and business related events and publications and participates in sports law and business competitions around the country.

Last year, the Forum hosted its 15th annual Fordham Sports Law Symposium, the premier student run Sports Law Conference.  The keynote speaker at the Symposium was Philadelphia Eagles' General Manager and Fordham Alum, Howie Roseman.  Several other prominent figures in the sports law and business industry also participated on speaking panels that discussed a wide range of legal issues facing the sports industry today.  Panel topics included Concussions in Sports and the Legal Ramifications for Teams and Athletes, Agents and the NCAA, and Current Labor Relations in the Big Four Sports Leagues.

In addition to the Symposium, the Forum also publishes sports related articles in conjunction with the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal (Fordham IPLJ) through the IPLJ blog.  The most highly accepted listing of journal rankings is done by Washington and Lee University School of Law.  According to the most recent rankings, the Fordham IPLJ is the first ranked journal for Arts, Entertainment and Sports and sixth ranked journal for Intellectual Property.

Lastly, the Fordham Sports Law Forum participates in the annual Tulane Law School National Baseball Salary Arbitration Competition each year.  Last year, the Forum sent two teams to New Orleans to compete.  One of the Forum team's finished undefeated in the competition.  Competition Arbitrators included prominent sports lawyers from around the country and included MLB Players Association President, Michael Weiner.  This year, the Forum will again participate in the Tulane Law School National Baseball Arbitration Competition as well as another competition at Thomas Jefferson University School of Law.

The purpose of the Forum is to provide an organization for students interested in sports business and the law.  It provides a platform: for top-level scholarly research and discussion on issues in sports law; to take advantage of Fordham’s location in New York City, the international center of sports law; to perform substantial research and journal related tasks in an interesting area of the law; for the development of legal skills through participation in competitions and events; to help increase Fordham’s standing in the legal community.

Fordham Law School has a number of prominent alumni working in sports, working for teams, leagues, agencies and prominent firms. The Forum makes it a priority to maintain a strong working relationship with our alumni.
