Fashion Ethics, Sustainability, and Development

This colloquium explores the intersection of fashion law and social values. Topics include ethical design and manufacturing; eco-chic or "green" fashion and environmental impact; cruelty-free fashion; fair trade; corporate social responsibility and charitable marketing; fashion-related nonprofits; fashion as a social enterprise; religious fashion and the morality of adornment; and fashion's role in international development, including ethical issues raised by clothing donations to the poor and to developing countries. Students will be required to write a series of short response papers over the duration of the semester.
