7.30.09 | Character and Fitness BrochureOnce again, the New York Lawyer Assistance Trust is offering your law school copies of a brochure regarding the character andfitness requirements for admission to the practice of law in New York State. This year, the brochure has been updated to reflect the appointment of Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman. A PDF of the file is attached here. As students commence their exciting journey that will hopefully culminate in their admission to the bar, it is critically important that they understand what will be expected of them with respect to character and fitness. This is especially true for students who may have some blemishes on their record. The brochure provides information to law students regarding conduct that may be cause for concern in the bar admission application process. In developing the text, the Trust worked with staff of New York's Lawyer Assistance Programs, liaisons to the character and fitness committees and those members of the Trust board who are law school professors. You may download the above PDF, or, you may visit the Lawyer Assistance Trust's web site at http://www.nylat.org/publications/brochures/documents/CharacterandFitnessBrochure09.pdf. This brochure is the latest in a series of initiatives that the Trust has undertaken to bring information regarding alcoholism, addiction and mental health concerns in the legal profession to the law school community. We welcome any comments you may have. Barbara F.
