Haroon Moghul, fellow at the Center on National Security at Fordham Law, recently gave a TED talk about the relationship between the figure of Muhammad, modern day political Islam, and the United States.  According to Moghul, Muhammad's political agenda was focused on promoting human solidarity and protecting the weak - two principles upon which the United States is founded.  These values, Moghul says, have been eclipsed by tribalism in today's Muslim world. Moghul explains that if we turn to look at the ideals of early Islam instead of focusing on the conflicts that exist today, we can reimagine the Western world and the Muslim world as ideologically compatible.  "There is a tremendous degree of overlap between the idea of America and the idea of Islam," Moghul says.  "And rather than see the two as opposed to each other, we can see the two as potentially and ideally mutually convergent."
