Susan Feeney '81 to be Sworn in as President of the New Jersey State Bar Association

Susan A. Feeney '81, a partner in the tax and benefits practice at McCarter & English, will be sworn in on Thursday, May 19, as the president of the New Jersey State Bar Association.Susan A. Feeney '81

Feeney will be the bar association’s 113th president and the seventh woman to hold the office. She will be sworn in at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City during the bar association’s annual meeting and convention.

“Susan is an exceptional attorney and colleague and well-deserving of this great honor,” said Stephen M. Vajtay, Jr., McCarter’s firm wide managing partner. “I have no doubt she will provide strong and intelligent leadership for the bar association, as she has done for many years in her many roles at McCarter.”

Michael P. Kelly, chairman of McCarter’s executive committee, said, “This is one of numerous impressive achievements for Susan, and I expect there will be many more. The firm looks forward to working with her and the bar association to help achieve her goals for the state’s legal community.”

Feeney has three primary goals for her presidency. She plans to establish a task force to examine strategies for expanding pro bono service; organize a day of service and civic education to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack; and expand leadership opportunities in the legal profession for people of diverse backgrounds. She will address these issues and other matters during a speech at the ceremony Thursday.

“I’m honored that the bar association has chosen me for this position, and I will work extremely hard to lead the bar through a successful year while focusing on policies that enhance the legal community and the services we provide to the people of New Jersey,” Feeney said. “I am grateful for the exceptional support I’ve received from McCarter for this endeavor and for all of my undertakings during my 20 years at the firm.”

Feeney's practice focuses on state taxation and local property taxation for all types of industries. Her practice includes redevelopment law and condemnation. She is a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on the Tax Court, and she is currently a member of the State and Local Tax Committee of the ABA Tax Section. She was appointed to the Sales and Use Tax Review Commission of the State of New Jersey and is a member of the NJ Division of Taxation Tax Director's Advisory Council.

Feeney is listed in the 2007-2011 issues of The Best Lawyers in America. She was a recipient of the 2011 TWIN (Tribute to Women and Industry) Award. She has been named one the Best 50 Women in Business by NJBIZ and one of the Top 50 female lawyers in the state by New Jersey Monthly magazine.
