Fordham’s Major UWS Expansion in the WorksFordham Law School in My Upper West, January 23, 2011
Curbed reports that Fordham University’s $1.6 billion expansion plans are now underway. The Jesuit school, whose Upper West Side campus is located throughout the blocks between 60th and 62nd and between Columbus and Amsterdam, won approval from the City Council last summer for the 25-year-long expansion plan, despite some neighbors’ protests that the taller buildings will block their access to and views of Lincoln Center. Now, the first part of the plan, a 22-story law school building and dorm on 62nd between Columbus and Amsterdam, is being put into reality with workers currently on site and excavation set to begin this month. The $250 million building is designed by Pei Cobb Freed and will include a curtain wall of cast stone, metal and glass. The Fordham Law School will occupy the lower nine stories, with 430 undergraduates living in the higher stories, and the 468,000-square-foot building will also have a two-story atrium, moot and trial court facility and a 562,000-volume law library. The ceremonial groundbreaking is slated to take place on May 2nd, with an expected 2014 building completion date. Check out Curbed for more renderings of the new law school building.
