Fordham Law Plans Fashion Institute

In 2006, Fordham law professor Susan Scafidi became the first U.S. law professor to offer a course in Fashion Law. On Sept. 8 at Fordham and with her very "dear friends" Diane von Furstenberg and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, she will launch the first Fashion Law Institute.

The institute will include five classes this upcoming school year. It is designed to not only offer a fashion-law education to lawyers and law students, but to designers and design students.

Ms. Scafidi, who also runs a blog called Counterfeit Chic, said she favors designs by Ms. von Furstenberg, Maria Cornejo and Narciso Rodriguez. She likes to take the "classic lawyer's business ensemble—pinstripes and pearls—and push it to its limits."

Her voice perked up when speaking on next month's spring shows. "I'm most excited about the big beautiful shows like Marc Jacobs, which is always a spectacle, but I'm interested in younger and newer designers that have just taken over a new house or started a new label."

She hasn't finalized her schedule for Fashion Week but is looking forward to the shows' move to Lincoln Center. "It's a nice benefit that it is literally moving right across the street. It will be much easier to change in my office and discreetly run to a show."
