May 20, 2010

Hon. Sherry Heitler '76 will be honored at the New York Women's Bar Association (NYWBA) 75th Anniversary Gala Annual Awards and Installation Dinner on June 10 at Capitale in Manhattan. She will receive the President's Special Award in recognition of her appointment as Administrative Judge for the Supreme Court, Civil Matters, New York County.

Judge Heitler was appointed to her current position in December 2009 by Chief Administrative Judge Ann Pfau with the approval of Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman. Prior to the appointment, Judge Heitler served as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Term in the First Judicial Department.

"We here at Fordham Law are very proud of Judge Heitler's achievements," said Dean William Michael Treanor. "Her judicial service has been simply extraordinary, and, as she takes on her post, I know her service will be marked by both her characteristic professionalism and her outstanding ability."

Judge Heitler was elected to her first judicial position—on the New York City Civil Court—in 1994. Fifteen years prior, she founded the law firm of Heitler & Levy, P.C. and taught Family Law at Baruch College, City University. In addition, she was a New York City Civil Court Arbitrator, a Director of the Spingold Foundation, and served in numerous matters as either a guardian, conservator or referee.

Judge Heitler serves as the Vice President for the National Association of Women Judges, the Director of the New York County Women's Bar Association, and the Director of the Jewish Lawyers Guild.
