SOCIAL WORK & THE LAW SPECIALIZATION FOR SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS

LAWYERS AND SOCIAL WORKERS can make a critical difference in the lives of at risk families and children. Professionals can rarely successfully help clients with issues such as child abuse and neglect, poverty, domestic violence, truancy, substance abuse, and related mental health when working in isolation.
The Interdisciplinary Center for Family and Child Advocacy helps train the next generation of professionals by coordinating the Graduate School of Social Services' Social Work and the Law specialization track. If you select this specialization, your field placement will be with an agency where you will work with families and children, explore how lawyers and social workers can work together to better meet client needs, and advocate for systemic change.
In recent years, students have been placed with the following agencies:
    • Administration for Children's Services
    • Bronx Defenders
    • Bronx Family Court
    • Fordham Tremont Community Mental Health Center
    • Highbridge Community Life Center, Bronx
    • Jewish Board of Family and Children Services
    • Lawyers for Children
    • The Legal Aid Society, Juvenile Rights Division
    • Legal Services of New York- Bronx
    • Lincoln Square Legal Services at Fordham University School of Law (Family Advocacy Clinic)
    • MFY Legal Services
    • New York Association for New Americans
    • Queens Legal Services Corporation
    • Sanctuary for Families
    • Westchester Legal Aid Society
To Apply: Declare your interest in interdisciplinary work by committing to the Social Work and the Law Specialization when applying for advanced year field placement. You will meet with the Center's coordinator to determine which placement best fits your needs.
