Externships

photoExternships provide opportunities for law students to assume some of the responsibilities of practicing lawyers, under the supervision of mentor attorneys. Externs observe and participate in a range of “real lawyering” experiences, from learning about the judicial process from a judge’s perspective, to second-seating an attorney at trial, to learning the intricacies of a particular area of law. Some placements offer litigation experience, while others might focus on legislative advocacy, public policy development, or transactional work. Whatever the particulars, experiential learning helps students to gain a unique perspective on the legal profession.

If you are interested in participating in an externship for academic credit during the Spring 2009 Semester, you must complete and submit an Application for Course Registration (PDF), which is due no later than December 18, 2008. Applications should be e-mailed to externships@law.fordham.edu.

If your externship was self-initiated, i.e., the Externship Office did not arrange the placement for you, it is also required that the proposed fieldwork placement be approved. You may learn whether the proposed fieldwork placement has been approved previously by the Law School’s Externship Office by checking with the Externship Program’s Administrator, Donna Welensky (by e-mailing her at externships@law.fordham.edu). If the placement has not been approved, a Mentor-Attorney Application (PDF) must be submitted by the agency or organization at which you propose to do your fieldwork.

An Application for Course Registration must be submitted by every student who wishes to obtain academic credit for an externship, regardless of whether the Externship Office assisted you in arranging the placement.
