Feerick Center News

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Feerick Center News. In this newsletter, we will share recent highlights and developments with the Center’s broad community of alumni, friends, and partners.

In this first issue, we are pleased to announce some wonderful milestones of the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island CLARO Programs. CLARO provides limited legal advice to New Yorkers on consumer debt issues, and the Feerick Center helps administer and support the program. CLARO operates weekly clinics in New York City Civil Court, which brings together law students, volunteer attorneys, and consumer law experts.

The program provides a rich learning opportunity for students. They play a critical role in helping staff sessions and in screening CLARO visitors. They also sit in on consultations and observe a variety of counseling styles. We have been extremely fortunate that many Fordham Law alumni have become involved with CLARO; recently, a new generation of alumni and former law student volunteers has joined the loyal pool of volunteers. Ariana Lindermayer, a Feerick Center student and alumna is currently a staff attorney at MFY Legal Services with the Consumer Rights Project. Ricardo Avila, a former Feerick Center volunteer, recently joined CAMBA Legal Services, also as a staff attorney.

Since the launch of the CLARO Programs, over 4,000New Yorkers have received legal assistance and over6,750 consultations have been conducted. Volunteer attorneys and students have devoted over 10,000 hours of service. We are most proud of this outstanding accomplishment.

This coming fall, on October 7, the Feerick Center will host the Awards and Benefit Reception to celebrate our 7th anniversary. The event will take place from 6–8 p.m. We hope you are able to join us. For details, contact Assistant Dean Robert J. Reilly at rreilly@fordham.edu.

The Center’s webpage lists our current and upcoming calendar, in addition to past events and programs. For further information on any of the Center’s initiatives, contact the Center’s Administrative and Programmatic Assistant, Wilma Tamayo-Abrue atwtamayoabreu@law.fordham.edu or 212-636-7671.
