Frank Handelman practices law in Manhattan with specialties in criminal defense, civil litigation, and real estate and probate law. During his thirty years in practice, he has tried dozens of cases to verdict in both state and federal court. His clients have included the lead defendant in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing case, and, in 2006, the grand juror accused of leaking information in a major insider trading case. Prof. Handelman is also active in elder law and is a former chair of the Elder Law Committee of the New York County Lawyers’ Association. He was the attorney for the alleged incapacitated person in the case that established the right to counsel for such individuals under the New York State Mental Hygiene Law, Article 81. Before entering private practice, Prof. Handelman was a defense attorney with the Legal Aid Society in the Bronx. He has a masters degree in social work, and prior to attending law school, worked as a community organizer, and co-founded a multi-denominational clergy-based community action group in the Bronx that prefigured the many successful organizations that have proliferated since.

In addition to his law practice and teaching, Prof. Handelman has also worked as a track and cross country coach. He is the Director of Training and Head Coach of Team for Kids, preparing runners for the ING New York City Marathon and other races, as part of the program of the New York Road Runners Foundation that raises money to support fitness and health programs in the New York City public schools. As a runner he competes nationally and internationally, and he is the 2007 National Masters indoor 800 meter champion.

Since 2002, Prof. Handelman has been an adjunct professor at Fordham teaching Fundamental Lawyering Skills. He has also taught extensively with the Intensive Trial Advocacy Program (ITAP) at the Cardozo Law School of Yeshiva University.

Prof. Handelman lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and has been active for many years on various community issues. He served as treasurer for the first two campaigns of current West Side City Councilwoman Gale Brewer.
