Dispute Resolution Society Named Finalists in Competition

March 24, 2010

For the second year in a row, and for the seventh time in the past nine years, Fordham Law’s Dispute Resolution Society were Regional Finalists in the ABA Representation in Mediation Competition. Harold “Tres” Bulger III '11 and Veni Manickam '11 placed second, while Saira Hussain '11 and Stephanie Baez '12 finished fourth.

In the ABA Mediation Competition, students act as both lawyers and clients. The lawyer-client teams work toward settlement with the aid of a neutral mediator. This year’s dispute topics included family law and contract law elements.

"Both teams performed incredibly well against the competition," said Michael Camarinos, Chairman of the Dispute Resolution Society. "In every round, both teams showcased why the Fordham Law DRS has consistently finished at the top of the region."

DRS Mediation Editor Justina Lopez ’10 helped train each team in the mediation process and alumni Stephen Grable '07 and Henry Ko '08 provided additional support and strategy.

"Society members really worked together during this competition so that these two teams could finish as well as they did," said Professor Jacqueline Nolan-Haley, Director of the Conflict Resolution & ADR Program. "We are all very proud of the results of their teamwork."
In addition to Professor Nolan-Haley, Professors Beth Schwartz, Deborah Shapiro, and Peggy Leibowitz offered professional and academic guidance to the teams.  Chairman Michael Camarinos ’10, Managing Editor Elena Poleganova ’10, Competition Editor Nicole Mazanitis ’10, Negotiation Editor Jordan Manekin ’11, and ICC Competitor and Community Service Editor Cindy Alvarado ’10 also assisted the teams.
Fordham Law's Dispute Resolution Program is ranked 10th in the nation by the 2010 U.S. News & World Report. The Dispute Resolution Society competes in national and international mediation, negotiation, and arbitration competitions, hosts an annual symposium attended by hundreds of academics and professionals in the ADR field, hosts the Annual Fordham Vis Practice Moot, and teaches a course on negotiation techniques to local high school students at MLK Jr. High School.
