Dispute Resolution Society Wins ABA Regional Negotiation Competition

December 14, 2009

Two Teams Advance to ABA National Negotiation Competition

Fordham Law’s Dispute Resolution Society (DRS) once again claimed the championship at the ABA Regional Negotiation Competition, making history in the process. Team members Allie Berkley '11 and Patrick Featherston '11 took first place for the Society after the judges awarded them near-perfect scores in all three of their rounds.

The DRS fielded three teams for the competition, and all three teams advanced to the final round—a first in ABA history. Alongside the championship team of Berkley and Featherston, Matt Bress '11 and Patrick Jacobs '11 placed third, and Cassie Hamar '11 and Nathan Poulsen '11 placed fourth. Over twenty schools from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut competed.

“This has been an overwhelmingly successful year for the Dispute Resolution Society and we’re just getting started,” said Michael Camarinos '10, Chairman of the Society.

The first and third place teams will compete in the ABA National Negotiation Competition at Disney World this February. This is the second time in DRS history that two teams have advanced to nationals.

“Our Dispute Resolution Society teams have performed phenomenally in competition this year,” said Professor Jacqueline Nolan-Haley, Director of the Conflict Resolution & ADR Program. “Congratulations to all the students who competed and to their coaches for their expert guidance. I look forward to their continued success at the national competition.”

Former Dean John Feerick added: "Congratulations to the Dispute Resolution Society and the competition teams for their superb work, making Fordham’s ADR program the envy of the world.”

The teams were coached by Jordan Manekin JD/MBA '11, the Society’s Negotiation Editor. The teams also received a tremendous amount of support from professors, students, and alumni members of the Society who helped with preparation and were on hand at the competition.

Fordham Law's Dispute Resolution Program is ranked 10th in the nation by the 2010 U.S. News & World Report. The DRS has won the ABA Regional Negotiation Championship five times in the past seven years and has advanced to the national competition for six of the past seven years. Manekin and Camarinos won last year’s regional competition and placed sixth in North America overall.

The Society also competes in national and international mediation and arbitration competitions, hosts an annual symposium on current issues in ADR, and teaches a course on negotiation at MLK Jr. High School.
