FLAA Affinity Groups

Tax Affinity Group
We have received almost 100 positive responses from alums since announcing the formation of a tax affinity group in last month’s edition of the Insider!  The Tax Affinity Group will be holding a kick-off event at 6 PM on Tuesday, January 28, 2013 at the law school.  We would like to make an additional call for participants as we begin to plan our 2014 agenda.

The tax affinity group hopes to gather Fordham Law alumni and current students active, or interested, in the Tax field to facilitate greater connection among alumni in this field.  We are looking for alums of all ages and from all areas of tax.  If you are interested in joining but have not yet contacted us, please contact Brian Power ’07.  Also, don’t forget to join the Tax Affinity LinkedIn group here.

Government Affinity Group
A group of alumni are looking to form an affinity group comprised of those with experience working in federal, state, and city-level positions. The goal is to share insights on how best to navigate careers in government. We hope to plan social events throughout the year and facilitate discussions on a variety of topics specific to government attorneys.

If you are interested in joining the group and/or being part of the steering committee, please contact John Owens Jr. ’04.

Compliance Affinity Group
A group of alumni are seeking to create a compliance affinity group. The group would facilitate interactions among alumni in this growing area.  Please email Jennifer Juste ’06 if you are interested in becoming involved.

SERV: the Fordham Law Veteran’s Group
SERV (Students for the Education and Rehabilitation of Veterans) has two chapters, one at Fordham Law and the other at New York University.  As the name suggests, SERV’s mission is to aid New York City Veterans in accessing their educational and rehabilitative benefits. Specifically, SERV works with veterans and non-profits in the areas of discharge upgrades, Department of Veteran’s Affairs benefits, and access to state and local level public assistance. SERV members who work on these issues have found the work to be satisfying and fulfilling. Through these endeavors, SERV provides its members with valuable clinical work and networking opportunities.

Additionally, SERV acts as a veteran's community at the law school, offering a place for students to share school, VA benefits, and employment best practices.  SERV intends to help all Fordham Law Veterans succeed in their legal careers by mastering their academics, acquiring practical legal skills, and finding post-graduate employment.  In addition to the discharge work, SERV will be hosting alumni networking events, legal career fairs, and working on outreach to educate the law school community on issues that affect veterans and military families.

Please contact SERV at fordhamserv@gmail.com to get on our listserv and to receive upcoming details about our first inaugural alumni event in Winter 2014, which will be a great opportunity to meet Fordham Law veterans and assist in their transitions to civilian life.

Chapter Chatter: New England and Atlanta Chapter Receptions
This Fall, the Fordham Law Alumni Association hosted two Chapter events in Boston and Atlanta. The New England Alumni Chapter Reception was held on October 24th at Robins Kaplan Miller & Ciresi, LLP and hosted by Christopher P. Sullivan, class of 1975. A group of over 25 alumni shared cocktails, conversation and the first pitch of the 2nd game of the World Series!

On November 6th, Simon Malko, class of 1997 and president of the Atlanta Chapter, and his wife, Christy, hosted the Chapter’s Alumni Reception at their home. Twenty Law and Business School alumni joined Dean Mike M. Martin and Asst. Dean Vera Bullock for a wonderful evening of networking and updates on the Law School.

Stay up-to-date on all the FLAA Chapter events near you. We hope to see you at the next Fordham Law event in your area!
