Fordham Law Introduces LL.M. Externship ProgramSeptember 26, 2013
Fordham Law School has launched an LL.M. Externship Program that will offer its graduate students the opportunity to complete for-credit externships with a wide variety of host organizations, including nonprofit organizations, corporate legal and compliance departments, government agencies, and law firms.
“Externship placement experiences will enrich the educational experience our LL.M. students receive in their doctrinal courses and promote their professional development by assisting them in integrating legal theory with skills and professional values,” said Toni Jaeger-Fine, Assistant Dean of International and Non-J.D. Programs.
In their placements, students will learn and explore competencies required in a particular practice area or setting. International LL.M. students, in particular, will benefit from obtaining hands-on experience in the practice of law in the United States.
Already two LL.M. students are engaged in externships. Jordana Moldauer, who is undertaking an externship with The Harry Fox Agency, is engaged in a wide range of legal work, including reviewing agreements, conducting research, responding to discovery requests, and helping to determine ownership of musical works.
“I am gaining a practical understanding of the legal issues that a field as complex as the music industry entails,” says Moldauer. “Seeing these legal concepts at play in real-life situations allows me to comprehend them better.”
Dana Buyx will be working this semester with Open Society Foundations’ Open Society Justice Initiative.
“The Initiative promotes human rights and builds legal capacity for open societies through litigation, advocacy, research, and technical assistance,” says Buyx. “In my placement, I will receive training including the formulation of a comprehensive action plan to address injustices. My work will include legal research and writing in the area of human rights.”
Both students also participate in a seminar course designed to sharpen their practice skills and equip them with tools that will help them succeed in their placements.
